Clarification on Impact Metric in Presentations

Hello everyone,

I am participating in the challenge and have a specific query regarding the “Impact” metric, particularly concerning the question: “To what extent could the presentation inform an action or decision?”. I would like to better understand how we are expected to address this metric.

Are we expected to include direct suggestions for actions or decisions that should be taken in response to the presented data? Or is it sufficient to demonstrate how the data can illuminate a problem or area of interest, leaving the interpretation and subsequent actions to the viewers?

Any guidance or examples you could provide to help clarify how this metric should be interpreted and addressed in our presentations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hi @christianrubioa! Very good question.

is it sufficient to demonstrate how the data can illuminate a problem or area of interest, leaving the interpretation and subsequent actions to the viewers?

This is on the right track. You do not have to draw conclusions yourselves from the visual to make concrete suggestions for decisions or actions. The focus is more on informing the decisions and actions of others.

Generally, we would like to see the extent to which participants have thought about how their visualization could be used in the real world. For example, considering who the intended audience is, what current decision-making process you may be improving, how your visual might integrate into existing workflows, etc.

Some of the practical recommendations for open science in the problem description also speak to this requirement.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you still have questions! We’re happy to help.
