Do I need to use python to participate in this competition?

No, you are not required to work in Python. Participants can use whichever tools they want to create visualizations. For more details, check out the problem description page (particularly the second on submission format).
I love how this competion is mainly focussing on one’s imagination rather than years of experience. Pretty sure some of us rookies would have had it rough otherwise.
