If anyone can share any notes, how is the groundtruth wind speed labels obtained?human curated? Also why do they seem so smooth through time? Shoudnt we expect some measure error/variance? and why some storms show a visible step behavior for wind speed? (increase by 5, by 10, by 20)
thx!

The ground truth wind speed comes from the national hurricane center (NHC) forecast advisories. These advisories are typically issued every 6 hours and are curated by humans. Currently, the NHC bins wind speeds in 5-kt intervals so there is not as much variability as one might expect. As for the storms with the step behavior, the 5-kt/10-kt increase should be a fairly common occurrence between two advisories, particularly in the early part of the storm life cycle. A 20-kt jump is also expected, but a bit more rare, and is indicative of a storm undergoing rapid intensification.
