Global Forecast System (GFS) data

Hi,
The data for 2017-2019 are not available on TDDS server:
https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/thredds/catalog/model-gfs-g3-anl-files/catalog.html

The https server does not work:
https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/data/global-forecast-system/access/grid-004-0.5-degree/forecast/&sa=D&source=editors&ust=1619215763547000&usg=AOvVaw1bPNAjOUSXmaqoVt-_MjLd

I am getting time out error for HAS server.

Is it possible for the participants to use NCEP GFS data archived at NCAR? They have 0.25 degree data: CISL RDA: NCEP GFS 0.25 Degree Global Forecast Grids Historical Archive

In real-time operational case, one can download data directly from NOMADS (Global Forecast System). However, historical data are not stored here.

So, I have 2 questions:

  1. is it possible to utilize NCAR’s archive?
  2. Is it possible to use 0.25 deg data? [On the instructions page, you only mention 0.5 and 1.0 degree datasets].

Thanks for bringing up these issues! Can you please submit the NCAR 0.25 degree data source through the official data request form? NASA Airathon: Data Approval Request Form

That’ll make it easier for us to track and respond to requests.

Thanks. I just submitted a formal request.

Hi @sukantabasu. Just to let you know, the GFS 0.25 grid has been approved, with NCAR as the approved data access location. Announcements have been made and problem descriptions have been updated in both tracks. Thanks for requesting it!

Related to this data product: There are forecasts available at various forecasting lead times. Is there any recommendation or restriction for what lead times we can use? In particular, would the “zero-hour” lead time forecast product be allowed? Or is this the same as the analysis data product (my reading of the product description leads me to believe that they are different products but I could be misunderstanding it)?

Thank you.

Adding to what Carl_Malings asked, could you please clarify what data on the GFS site is valid for us to use? There are many options there.

What is the forecast data vs. the GFS Analysis/GFS-ANL data?

For any given day, what is the most recent data we can use?

Only the GFS Forecasts (GFS Model) data is allowed, per the problem description. You can read more about the differences here: https://rda.ucar.edu/datasets/ds083.2/docs/Analysis.pdf

Please refer to this post: Clarification on features' dates used for prediction - #3 by cszc

If I am understanding correctly, yes, any lead time can be used as long as it is the GFS Forecasts product. Do you have a link to the data to confirm?

For example, the file with “f000” in it, on this page: TDS Catalog

That page is accessed by clicking on “TDS Access” on the data access page and navigating to a specific year and day.

Thanks for the example! That is indeed allowed.
